Over the next nine weeks I will be releasing videos on all seven Hyper games and the associated hardware. Since it's a rare and "failed" platform, it rarely gets talked about and I wanted to change that.

Anyone else ever play or collect for the Hyper?

I used to have a motherboard and 4 game kits (the fighters). Picked it up NOS from vectorlogic (Jeff F) in the early 2000's. That 5 item bundle was common as muck back then, for a year or two sellers almost couldn't give them away!

Never rated it.

Yeah the Rev 1 fighting board with the four fighters was super common, as those were the primary games in the US. Have become much rarer and more $ in the intervening years

Had I known there was a House of the Dead style game I probably would have picked one up.

@Awbacon Say, do you think that the Hyper Neo-Geo 64 would have done a bit better if SNK had released it as a console only and not as an arcade system board?

doubtful. It was a mess of a system. Every function is broken down to its own ASIC. It would have cost a fortune to produce (even if it was cd based, which was the plan) and even in 97 it wouldn’t have been much more impressive than what was currently available.

In arcades it released mid way into 97. Considering DC released in fall of 98 there would be almost zero head start to get a install base.

plus apparently is was insanely hard to program for. 2D and 3D are on their own chips, and separate 2D and 3D functions have their own chips (four ASIC’s for 2D, four for 3D. Eight chips need to work in tandem JUST for visuals)

I think it was always destined to fail, even if it was cool in its own right

Sorry for the OT, but is there an emulator for this system?

not OT at all. Honestly I expect most people to emulate as the hardware isn’t cheap and it can be a bit rare.

MAME. Its not perfect, but it’s playable. You’ll get some graphical and audio glitches but you can still enjoy the game. I tried it on an i7 4700K and a 1080 Ti (ugh I need a system upgrade for my cpu lol) and it ran full speed, just a bit glitchy

All about just how complicated and insane the Hyper actually is. If anyone has any thoughts on some of the outstanding questions in the video I’m all ears!

That rally/racing game looks really enjoyable!
With SNK making a comeback (again), I wonder if they will ever dare to touch any of their Hyper games for re-release.....

Was wiring all this up and making it work on a supergun worth it? Lol probably not. It’s a fun game and this is the first 1080p60 capture ever, but getting it working was no easy task!

The result of having an engineer take a look at the Hyper. Tons of mysteries solved :)
