Everyone,

Browsing Yahoo Auctions today, I noticed for sale an interesting machine: a HP64000.

As you may recall, these were used to develop early NES and MSX games (among others), and if you look closely, this one has an 8KB EPROM still installed in the programmer...

I wonder if a small group of us could attempt a group buy to see what is in that ROM (the HP64000 itself does not have a hard disk), and I may be interested in the machine itself if it doesn't cost me both kidneys to ship it from Japan to Canada...

Cheers,

Jolly

What’s wrong with the screen? It looks like it’s covered in mold or something.

It happens to the 64000, the screen has a second layer atop the glass CRT tube, and the glue between the two eventually degrades.
It can be cleaned quite easily...

I have seen others in the same conditions before restoration, and they turned out just fine...

Those concentric rings are absolutely consistent with a tube that's suddenly lost it's vacuum. I had an old HP scope that had been dropped and the neck snapped that looked exactly like that.

I see, fair enough. As I said I saw two of these being repaired after the screen glue decayed and they turned out ok, but you are right, the rings are suspicious, this CRT could have indeed cracked.
