If you get "unknown disc", it may be the case of "disc read error", so you may need to replace the laser.

The laser can be replaced with KHS-400A, KHS-400B, or KHS-400C. Using KHS-400C is highly recommended since it is more reliable than the other two.

You don't need to use the disc drive. I would recommend installing the homebrew toolchain so you can develop programs making use of the 8MB of IOP memory, 128MB of EE memory, and functionality allowing you to debug IOP programs across IOP reboots. https://github.com/ps2dev/ps2dev

I also recommend checking Open PS2 Loader, which can load games from USB, ethernet, or HDD.
If you want to load from ethernet or HDD, you need a SCPH-10190 (or its equivalent debug model) placed in the PC CARD slot.
Additionally, if you want to load from HDD, you need either a SCPH-10210, SCPH-10390, or SCPH-20400 (or its equivalent debug model) plugged into the device in the PC CARD slot.

Use the dsnet toolset I linked earlier, which will allow you to access local files.

OK im assuming it needs to be installed on Linux, also i think i have a problem with step 2. Copy RDB to the desired place on your memory card. i think my controller and memory ports are not working since when i received my kit the cable came off in shipping and the connector was pulled half off the board. it may need to be re-soldered.

You just need the dsnet toolset. You don't need to install RDB.
Open PS2 Loader supports PS3 contoller using USB.
do you know if a commarcial replacement will work?
Yes. You can use one for either fat or slim. If you use one for slim, be aware that it will not fit in the casing correctly.
